Hurricane Hairdo and Beauty Considerations

By Lance Winslow Most meteorologists and weather predictions are stating now that the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season will be one of the largest on record and that means it will be a bad hair day. You need to consider a new hurricane hairdo to maintain your image during the hurricane season. You can expect very hot and high winds from tropical storms, tropical depressions and of course the small and large category hurricanes. Even if you evacuate during mandatory evacuation; you may still experience high winds up to 1000 miles away from where the hurricane actually makes landfall and you may not have time to keep brushing your hair every five minutes or more and keep it perfect. Therefore you must maintain a hairstyle, which is conducive to very high and hot winds so that your hair falls back into place effortlessly. This is why the hurricane hairdos and other beauty considerations are among the top priorities for women during the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season. If you’re planning your evacuation procedure and necessary supplies away from the hurricane area of the potential landfall strike then you’ll need to take certain makeup with you and you should be advised that you may lose sleep and even stay in your car overnight because many of the hotel rooms will be filled. You’ll need a simple haircut to prevent you from having a bad hurricane hair day and you will need to take simple beauty aids to freshen yourself up without being able to take a shower. Hurricanes are serious business and therefore you need to take your hairdo and beauty supplies serious. Consider always the 2006. “Lance Winslow” – Online Think Tank forum board. Weight Loss – With The Atkins Diet

By Michael Russell What if I told you you’d able to eat all the juicy steaks, succulent seafood with butter and bacon and cheese omelettes and still lose massive quantities of weight? What if I also explained to you that you wouldn’t necessarily have to exercise to lose this weight? If I’ve got your attention and you’re willing to take the plunge, let me introduce you to the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet is known as a Standard Ketogenic Diet. The term ketogenic refers to the fact that your body must enter ketosis in order for this diet to work. Ketosis is when your body and more so your brain stops using glucose (sugar) to function and now adapts to using ketones. Is it safe? Well it’s a diet that has been used as far back as the 60s by bodybuilders to shed unwanted fat. The mistake most people make is assuming that this is a fairly new diet while all that’s really happened is that it’s become more main stream in the last decade or so. Many studies have been done not only on the long term effects but also on the overall efficiency of this diet and they all conclude that it does indeed work and there are no apparent short term health risks. Before taking the Atkins diet for a test run you should contact your personal physician and talk it over with them. The initial stage of the Atkins diet is the hardest as it is the time when your brain tries to adapt to using ketones. Most people encounter a sort of brain fog where they feel a little lethargic and may encounter headaches. After the first 2 weeks this will subside and you’ll feel even better then you felt before. The first thing you’ll need to buy is ketone sticks. They sell them at most pharmacies and they are a vital part of your diet as they are the only indication of if you are in ketosis. The first stage of the Atkins diet is the induction phase and it last 2 weeks. This is where you will see the most significant weight loss while on the diet. After this phase is through you’ll evaluate if you’d like to stay in this phase or if you’d prefer to add some carbohydrates back into your diet and taper off the massive weight loss. First let’s look at how to get you into ketosis. Both entering into and maintaining ketosis is amongst the most misunderstood aspects of the Atkins diet. Many people have a difficult time getting into ketosis and while in it they don’t quite understand what it is they’re doing to be knocked out of it. The ratio of protein to fat is what causes this confusion and the lack of explanation on this critical issue is why most people never succeed on this diet. When attempting to enter ketosis you must keep your daily protein intake at no more then 20%. Your fat intake must be at no less then 80% while your carbohydrate intake must remain at 0! Yes that is correct you can’t have any carbohydrates at all until you have successfully entered ketosis. This initial stage usually lasts 2- 3 days. After you have entered ketosis in order to remain in ketosis you must change your ratios to approximately 5% from carbohydrates, 30% from protein and 65% from your fat intake. In the induction phase you will be relegated to eating mostly cheese, eggs and meat but as you progress to the next phase you will be able to add vegetables and even the occasional fruit back into your diet. As I stated before the initial phase of this diet lasts 2 weeks and now you’re faced with the decision of continuing the induction phase or moving on to more of a maintenance phase where you’ll gradually increase your carbohydrate intake, until you’ve noticed you’re being knocked out of ketosis. At that point you will have determined how many carbohydrates you can handle while still being in ketosis. The Atkins diet is definitely not for everyone but if you do feel you can handle it you’ll be able to lose sizable amounts of weight with a minimal effort. You will experience energy levels that you never knew you had and most importantly you’ll never feel hungry or deprived. Addressing the Fears and Feelings Associated With Weight Loss

By Anne Marie Baugh It seems a little strange that losing weight can entice feelings of fear. Fear doesnt seem to have a place in such a constructive process. Usually weight loss is associated with both positive and negative feelings. The positive feelings are more obvious and understandable. Youre feeling better, have more energy, look better, fit in nicer clothes, etc. However, are you aware that negative feelings about your life changing process are also normal? Weight gain happens for a reason and its not all about that familiar hand to mouth motion. Its not just about food its about what is behind the overeating. Smaller weight gains can usually be attributed to just poor eating and exercise habits. However, large weight gain is almost always associated with something much deeper. Gaining weight is camouflage. It allows you to disappear in society, which in turn can make you feel safer. The key is to understand what you were hiding from? Was there a trauma in you life that needs to be addressed? Conversely, as you begin to understand why you gained the weight, you also need to address your feelings as you succeed at your weight loss efforts. This is a journey that will require time and patience. You may stall and have to restart. You may lose motivation and need assistance to get back on track. You may not fall off the wagon; you may execute a premeditated jump off the wagon. These actions can all be associated with fear. If this sounds all too familiar, take the time to address these volatile emotions before they take you down. The following pro-active steps can ease the fears and keep you on track. Find A Support System. This can be a personal trainer who understands your struggle and is willing to push to keep you on track. The trainer may use motivational techniques or tactics that help you face your fears head on and eliminate the need to self-sabotage your forward motion. Personal Trainers are NOT just for movie stars any more! They are available to the general public. Call your local gym for a referral. If a personal trainer is not an option, team up with a friend who has succeeded with weight loss and is willing to help you stay on track by exercising with you daily. Share food journals. You will learn as much from your friends food journal and your friend will be necessary accountability to keep your eating habits in check. Daily Journal Writing. Emotions locked in your mind become bigger and bigger over time which then become nearly impossible to control. Everything starts with a thought! Once you learn to train and manage your thinking you will be able to change your life. Write out your feelings and fears. The mere act of writing helps you to understand why you feel what you feel and releases the negative energy. Follow Up With Affirmations. After releasing the negative emotions, follow up with affirmations. It is important to fill the space with a positive turn around. Give your brain something good to dwell on now. Take Quiet Time. Often our lives are so busy we dont have time to breath, much less think. Give yourself 15 minutes a day to sit and let go of the mental stress. This takes more effort than you may think. During these 15 minutes consciously let go of any thoughts that are occupying your mind. Vacuum the mental clutter and empty your mind of all thought. Let your system rest for 15 minutes and you will find that you are more in control of more of your day. Fear is a normal part of any major life change. Once you understand this you can begin to address this emotion and push past it. Keep that forward motion by challenging any feelings that cause you to sabotage your positive growth. Teenage Girls Wearing Make Up To School

By Angela Chen Shui Should teenage girls wear make up to school before age 16? I just went over to Yahoo! Answers to play. I like to visit and see what questions interest me and answer the ones that do. Yesterday I saw one asking for help to apply eye liner make up, a category of the board I had never ventured into and remembered how hard it was to learn how to apply eyeliner in my teen years. I wrote out an answer and just as I was ending with ‘Have fun’, there was a surge in the power and my computer went out. Lost!!! So a bit earlier, I went back over to see if I could find the question again but couldn’t. What I did see were quite a few questions asking for help from young teenage girls or asking about what age is good to start wearing make up everyday. My mother was strict. I couldn’t wear makeup outside of the house until I was in Grade 11. I was allowed to practice putting it on at home before that though. In addition, most schools here in Jamaica still require uniforms. Makeup is simply not an option for teenage girls going to school here. So I was a bit surprised to see a question over at Yahoo asking if it was OK to wear make up everyday to school and seeing most of the answers saying yes. Hmmmmmm… Maybe I’m old school but I feel teenage girls need to concentrate on learning at school. I realise the U.S. is very different from Jamaica but I still feel limits are fine. There are so many aspects to beauty other than what we see in magazines and on TV and like you probably do, I tend to stress inner beauty first. Self worth has become such an important issue throughout our world that I feel it warrants us going back a bit to basics. My mother taught me that it was my inner qualities that were lasting and important and that outer beauty and knowing how to put myself together well was wonderful but not the more important of the two. I think teaching our children how to create lives that express peace, harmony, giving, gratitude, love, compassion, wholeness, tolerance and wisdom everyday will go a much farther way to expanding that throughout the world. Then as older teens and young women, our daughters will wear make up that only highlights their natural outer beauty and reflects their fully developed inner beauty as well. I responded to the question by that young school girl by suggesting that she wait until sixteen to start wearing a bit of eyeliner and a light lip gloss. I also suggested that she could in the meantime practice taking care of her skin by getting an excellent skin care system with cleanser, toner and moisturiser, as good skin is always the key foundation of outer facial beauty. What do you think? Do young girls have enough pressure to grow up from the ads on TV, society in general and their peers? Is the rest of their life too short to wait until 16 to start wearing make up everyday? My daugher is now 8 and we’ve already discussed that piercing of her ears and wearing makeup will wait until she’s 16. My sister, who lives in the U.S. and who also has an eight year old daughter is also grooming her to wait for certain things until shes sixteen. Pray that we both maintain our sanity, continued friendship and harmonious agreement on limits with our daughters as they reach their teenage years!!! ;- Angela Chen Shui, Soul Alignment Spiritual Life Coach, Teacher of Divinity, Awakening Energy Healing Facilitator and Internet Mompreneur publishes “Soul Self Help Insights”, the Beyond-the-Mind, Soul-thrilling self help, New Energy spirituality newsletter. Year End Technology Assessment (YETA)

By Andrea Cannavina Yes, it is that time again! The air is crisp, people more apt to smile as the holidays approach and for most firms, the work load is slowing down as the year winds to a close. Year end is the perfect time for law firm administrators and managing partners to take a look at their firms practices from a macro view and assess the hardware, software, policies and company processes utilized by the firm or YETA. Why do you need a YETA? First, it is always good to stay attuned to the physical equipment and processes in place at any firm. It is also always a good thing to understand how technology can improve or change over time and how best to position your firm to take advantage of any opportunities new technology presents. From security risks of one wrong OK to a download that can wreak havoc on an entire companys network, to staying abreast of the capabilities of the actual machines on which the company information is routed; to a truly comprehensive back up plan, a YETA helps managers stay on top of it all. Additionally, a YETA can pinpoint where likely failures will occur, long before any dreaded loss or breach of information occurs. When conducting a YETA, there are four areas of concentration: Hardware Software Office policies Work flow Completing the hardware inventory is really quite simple with the free software from Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com). Simply download the program and run it on each computer within your network. Belarc will provide you with a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of the actual hardware, as well as a list of the software installed on each computer. Do not be surprised if this list is extensive. Many PCs come with pre-installed software that you may never use or even know was installed. In any event, when it has completed, Belarc will display a report on the screen. Print the report for each computer and label it with the name of the staff member or location of the computer. Along with keeping a copy of each report in a folder or IT binder, a copy can be folded and placed in an envelope taped to the side of the machine or monitor. Be careful not to cover any vents! According to Legal IT Specialist Michael Glasser of www.computers-unlimited.com, any computer with a processor of less than 2 Gigahertz, memory of 500 Megabytes or less or running Windows 98 or ME as its operating system should be the next candidate for replacement. Next on the YETA list is software. Make a list of the most important or frequently used software in your practice (billing, case management, e-mail, word processing, etc). Then check the Belarc report to make sure every computer has those applications installed and that all are running the same version. It is very important to keep each application used at your firm within one or two versions of the most current release. Most vendors limit support and in some instances, older versions of software have security risks. You can visit each software companys website to learn the most current release information. Without a doubt, make sure that any virus software is up-to-date for any firm computer which has access to the internet! The third step to completing a YETA, or office policies, will have the most impact on staff. Deciding what office policies are with regard to computer use is tricky from a political standpoint. However, this is an important issue which needs to be determined and enforced. Any policy put into place should consider: accessing personal e-mail accounts (AOL, Yahoo, etc) use of instant messaging programs (MSN Messenger, AIM, etc.) personal use of the internet (paying bills, shopping during lunch) downloading from the internet (ANYTHING) Some firms require employees sign an agreement with regard to the use of firm computers and the Internet. If you would like a sample agreement send an e-mail to: michael@computers-unlimited.com with Free Sample Agreement in the subject line. The fourth and final step is to analyze practice work flow to see where improvements can be made or technology applied. For instance, one easy to implement upgrade is to go from tape based dictation to digital. By making the tape an electronic file, attorneys can work from anywhere and firms can take advantage of smartsourcing initial drafts transcription, after hours and weekend work to a legal transcription service or Virtual Assistant, making overtime a thing of the past! Along with improving the actual processes, identify the steps that repeat themselves with each file and client. Think like Henry Ford – the more time you can save from the drudgery of repetitive functions, the more time that everyone has to concentrate on the important aspects of running the practice. Before you can conclude your YETA, you need to poll the staff or brainstorm with the whole office over coffee as to how they think they can be more efficient or where they see areas for improvement. Not only will you gain valuable insight, being included in the process rather than merely directed makes staff members feel a part of the solution. In the end this makes for much less resistance when the time comes to implement the actual changes. What are you waiting for January 1 will be here before you know it! Andrea Cannavina, Master Virtual Assistant and President/CEO of LegalTypist, Inc., helps sole practitioners, law firms and companies which service the legal industry upgrade their dictation processes to digital in order to get more done with less (less employees, less equipment and less stress)! A Review of Martha Stewart

By Morgan Hamilton I’ve never been one for cooking, entertaining company, or designing my home, so Martha Stewart is never exactly been on my radar before. Sure, I heard all about her insider trading scandal and subsequent imprisonment, who hasn’t, but I really didn’t know the first thing about the woman. Then I started watching her television show, The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, which was a spin-off of Donald Trump’s popular series. She was actually rather impressive in the way that she handled herself. First of all, I had never even watched the original Trump series, so I don’t know why I wanted to watch the Martha Stewart series. I think an acquaintance tipped me off that was rather entertaining so I checked it out. In case you’re like me and have never seen The Apprentice before, the basic premise of the show is that 16 individuals compete over the course several months for an executive-level position with a six-figure salary. It’s a long, drawnout process in which these people and try to impress Trump by completing certain tasks that are reassigned to them. At the end of each task, members of the losing team were called into a conference room for a meeting with Martha Stewart and two other high-ranking officials from her company (one of whom was her daughter). The losers would then be sent packing by Martha and the winners would live to fight another day. I later was able to learn quite a bit about Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, which is the name of her holding company. I heard about how the company was founded, discovered some of the basic philosophies that the executives embrace, and received a little bit of a glimpse into how they run their day to day operation. As viewers, we also got to see a side of Martha Stewart that not many people in the business world were privy to. In one case, reports were issued for members of the winning team as incentive. Some of the rewards included hanging out with Martha at one of her many homes in the New York area. So a few of the candidates got to go horseback riding with her, play Scrabble with her, and even eat a homemade breakfast with her. After tuning in to the show, my perspective regarding Martha Stewart and the MSLO Corporation completely changed. After all, both entities had suffered from some seriously negative publicity in the months leading up to the premier of The Apprentice. So if you’re interested in learning more about Martha Stewart, then watching this television show might be a good place to start. It’s a lighter, more entertaining look at the entertainment mogul than you are likely to find anywhere else and presents a good contrast to the way Stewart is portrayed in other media outlets. And of course we all know where Martha Stewart cut her teeth. She is a well-known diva of all things domestic, including cooking, gardening, entertaining, well I think you know what I mean. Morgan Hamilton offers his findings and insights regarding the world of gardening. Dating After 40: “Pimpin” – Dating Multiple Guys

By R.L. Morgan “Save a boyfriend for a rainy day and another, in case it doesn’t rain.” Mae West I’ve found that successful dating requires juggling several men at once. It is like sales, you have to have a number of prospects in the pipeline. I frequently date several men in the same time period until two of us decide to be exclusive or one of us decides to move on. If you only date one at a time, it takes too long to get the next one in the pipeline. When I was explaining this to my teenage nieces, they said I was “pimpin’.” Now hold your hat — their definition of a pimp was not the same as mine. It merely means dating around. Let’s be clear here that dating around is does not mean sleeping around. You can date multiple people and not sleep with any of them. In fact, I’d recommend you not sleep with any of them until you decide to be exclusive and you both agree that means letting go of all the others you’ve been seeing. It is not wise or safe to be a “player.” Dating around takes special skills. You have to remember the guy’s name when you’re with him, unlike the time I was halfway through dinner and couldn’t think of my date’s name (it was a first date). I have been told by a guy pal that when a man can’t remember your name on a date, he calls you “sweetie.” You think it’s endearing; he gets off the hook. You also have to remember other details that he’s shared, otherwise you’ll ask the same things over again and he’ll think you didn’t pay any attention at all. I’ll share an easy way to track this in another posting. You also have to have the discipline to not talk about your other guys while on a date. This is dclass. While you can imply that you are seeing others, don’t throw it in his face. He may think you are slutty. But dating around gives you an opportunity to have multiple activity needs met. One likes foreign films, another opera. One likes to hike, another is a tennis buff. BTW, he may be dating around, too. Clarify this on the first few dates just to be sure you’re on the same page. When I do this, I always ask if he’s sleeping with anyone. Multiple sex partners increase the risk of STDs. I recommend not sleeping with anyone til you’ve decided to be exclusive, then you both get tested for STDs before going further. So dating around has its pros and cons. I find the pros outweigh the cons, and open, honest communication is best if you are going to date others simultaneously. R.L. Romancing The Friends

By Toni Coleman You have been dating for a couple of months and believe he may be the one. Both of you have hinted at getting together with friends, and now she is asking you to come to a party this Saturday where many of her close pals will be. You are concerned about making a good (great) impression on these friends who mean so much to your significant other AND who could greatly influence where (if) your relationship goes. After all, they are a large and very tight knit group and your new love has related several horror stories about other first meetings that have occurred with this clan. The main question you are probably asking yourself is, How can I put my best foot forward and help them get to know the real me? The answer is simpler than you may think and will require you to shift the focus away from YOU and onto your girlfriend/boyfriend and the relationship the two of you have. You are not in this alone. You have met this right person who means a lot to you and the two of you are going into this as a team. Therefore, working together to prepare for this meeting, presenting a loving and united front to the friends, and demonstrating an openness and interest in his/her life and friends will be all you will need to have a successful beginning. The following tips will put you on the right path to winning acceptance and (perhaps) the beginning of many new friendships. Dont try too hard. If you become focused on getting them to like you, you will probably come across as insecure, overbearing, too opinionated or just plain narcissistic. Relax and follow their lead as you let them decide what they want to hear/know. Show an interest in them. This works especially well when you are a little anxious. Ask them questions about their career, interests and where they are from. Encourage them to tell stories about their group and some of the experiences they have shared together. You get to sit back and laugh and enjoy listening to them instead of feeling like you are on an interview. Go with the flow. This is not the time to counter someones opinion or to have a lively debate about politics, religion, etc. The last thing you need is to come across as confrontational or controlling, etc. Dont get defensive. You will be a little sensitive to their words, expressions, etc. and need to be careful to remain neutral and not to take yourself too seriously. If someone says something that hits you wrong or is just downright argumentative, let it go. The others will see you as a good sport who handled that well. Dont monopolize the conversation. In a first meeting, it is best to present yourself as a good listener who cares about what others have to say. Join in and offer to provide assistance with preparing, serving or cleaning up a meal or with any tasks that need to be done. Nothing makes you feel more like family then rolling up your sleeves and working side by side with the others. Watch your alcohol intake. It can be tempting to have a few drinks to try and relax; but remember that this can backfire if you have one too many and become sloppy or exhibit poor judgment or bad behavior. Remember that you and the friends want the same thing- his/her happiness. You have at least one important thing in common- and may find you have many others as well. As you prepare for this first encounter, make sure you discuss the different people and personalities beforehand with your partner. If there is something they or you should know about beforehand, discuss it so there will be no surprises or ambushes. Then make a plan that covers the where, what and how questions and one that you are both comfortable with. Most importantly, go and have a good time. Home Greenhouses

By Jason Gluckman If you love gardening and hate the winter months when your garden is for the most part bare, a greenhouse is the perfect solution. With a greenhouse, you can enjoy spring all year round, because a greenhouse is a gardeners haven during winter. Just like normal gardening, greenhouse gardening can be your retreat to spend some time alone, reflect on your day and gather your thoughts while tending to your plants. A greenhouse in your backyard can be a perfect getaway during the cold, harsh winter. Enter your warm greenhouse any time of day, and you will be swept away by the refreshing scent of fresh flowers. If you are looking to have a greenhouse on your land, you will find that your options are endless. You can accommodate a small cozy greenhouse in any place that gets optimal sunlight. Home greenhouses come in a number of shapes and sizes, and you will be able to find one that suits your needs. If you feel that you dont want a greenhouse all year long, or if you want to utilize your garden in other ways for the rest of the year, then you can purchase a portable greenhouse. You can grow just about anything in your greenhouse. Most often greenhouses are used for growing flowers, vegetables and fruits. These are then transferred outdoors when the weather turns warm. Bumblebees are used as pollinators but seasoned gardeners use artificial pollination. However, you will have to remember that a greenhouse has it own requirements and requires more effort than outdoor gardening. A closed environment means that you will have to control the light, heat and humidity of the greenhouse while constantly watching for pests and diseases. Greenhouses provides detailed information on Commercial Greenhouses, Greenhouse Gardening, Greenhouse Kits, Greenhouse Windows and more. Greenhouses is affiliated with Bonsai Pots. With a little bit of effort, you can find a gift that is meaningful and creative. Get out all of your craft supplies and prepare to create an extraordinary, creative and romantic gift idea. Make personalized and unique coupons with different tickets such as A day of cuddling or A special day together or A movie night and compile them into one special book. The coupons never expire and your sweetie can use them WHENEVER they want! If you love taking pictures, put your creativity to work as you design a special scrapbook as a gift. The time and effort you put into it will be well worth the look on your loved ones face when they see what you have done! If you have been together for a while and have saved keepsakes from all of your special occasions, craft a creative and unique box with special pictures, words, and poems and include all of your memorabilia. For years to come, you can add to the box every time you give you sweetheart a card or save a ticket stub from the movie theatre. A homemade card or poem is always a creative romantic gift on its own as well. If you love baking, you have a myriad of opportunities to impress your loved one with a creative gift. Buy cookie cutters in the shape of Xs and Os along with hearts, and make your sweetie some special cookies that express your love! You can even form a giant heart shaped cookie cake with store bought cookie dough! If your love adores chocolates, buy a large heart shaped box and underneath every chocolate place a small piece of paper with a reason why you love him or her. With every piece she eats, she will be reminded over and over again about your love for her. Print out dozens of pictures on fabric paper. Cut them into squares and sew them together to make a beautiful quilt that will last forever. If you have been together for a long time, you can even add special fabric memorabilia, such as a piece of the dress you were wearing on your first date or if you have children, a piece of their baby blankets. This special gift will last a lifetime and will be a constant reminder of your special love for them. Remember, the ultimate creative romantic gift idea is any gift that truly comes from the heart!
